House with studio space in Chelva: Azoque 1

300 meters away from us, we renovated an ancient house. Chelva is an authentic Spanish village, 70 km from Valencia, surrounded by olive trees. Nearby is a Roman aqueduct, deep gorges, etc. The house has three floors: On the ground floor are the living room, kitchen, bathroom and a terrace of 20 m2. On the first floor there are three bedrooms and in the attic there are two rooms that can be used as a studio. Rent: € 380 per month, for larger groups around 440 €. Per week 110-140 €. Wifi internet included.

Wilberforces is a new work within our long series of vibratory projects. The title refers directly to a phenomenon from science, the Wilberforce Pendulum. This pendulum is nothing more than a hung metal spring with below it a central weight plus eccentric weights for calibration. The secret of the system lies in conceiving a calibration in such a way that the resonant frequencies of vertical movement and rotation of a spring are so near to each other that once set in motion its movement can change gradually from vertical motion into rotation and vice-versa without adding energy from an external source. It is an example of a coupled mechanical oscillator, often used as a demonstration in physics education.

In Wilberforces three long springs are used for generating video and audio data. The springs have a length of around six meters, a size normally not found in physics laboratories and resulting in spectacular large and slow movements. Each spring is hung from above and attached to a pneumatic actuator that sporadically adds energy to the system. Below one of the springs hangs a video camera and microphone, below the other two hang tiny loudspeakers. Signals from the moving camera, mike and speakers provide the basic material for the sound and images produced by the work, obviously influenced by everything occurring in and around the FACT Atrium. The irregular motion of the springs can be tracked and experienced through a real time projection of further processed sound and image within a purpose-built dark space at the rear of the building.

Mirlitones was commissioned by DordtYart, Dordrecht, Netherlands. The title refers to a primitive instrument that has appeared in a multitude of forms in various parts of the world. All these instruments exist of a hollow form with a membrane mounted that can be brought into vibration by blowing or singing. The best-known member of the family is the kazoo used until present times in pop music.

The point of departure for the work was the spectacular noise produced by children with minuscule plastic mirlitons in the cavalcade of the Funeral of the Sardine, the final act of the biggest fiesta in the Spanish town Murcia.

In 2004 we built giant lions roars for Último Esfuerzo Rural where we created a new context for age-old instruments. Also the Mirlitones are much bigger than their predecessors and produce a world of sounds little known in musical practice. The installation exists of suspended vertical pipes, one to three meters long, equipped with a vibrating membrane at the upper side. The air used to bring the membranes into vibration comes from a compressor and a web of tubes and taps controlled by a computer. Small fluctuations in the air pressure cause subtle changes in the sound, composed of many ultra-low frequencies, harmonics and phenomena like beats and combination tones that arise from simultaneously sounding pipes. Because all the pipes share the air from the same limited source they also influence each other resulting in a fragile and complex sonorous system, unpredictable up to the smallest detail.

Our work Último Esfuerzo Rural (“Last Rural Effort”) was premiered in Valencia at the Ensems festival of contemporary music in May 2004. It is composed of two complementary installations. Together these produce a poetical ode dedicated to rural life and its people with an independent and creative state of mind that is disappearing in our globalised world. At the time we combined three periods in the project: The rural, industrial and computerized eras. Now, eight years later, it is about time to dedicate a work to the mechanical and analogue era, before nobody remembers how real things work and interact.

Último Esfuerzo Industrial is a simple and effective work. It consists of three electric motors, three frequency controllers, three contact microphones and three bass guitar amps that amplify the signals captured by the mikes. The motor speeds may be controlled with a computer or manually with analogue control units.

Its sound is extremely dynamic with frequencies parting from humming basses and pleasant mids up to acrid trebles.
